Kentucky Delta Rural Project

Initiated in 2001, the Kentucky Delta Rural Project centered on addressing community-initiated health issues through the establishment of local community health councils in service area counties. In 2004, KDRP graduated to a regional approach and focused efforts on top community driven issues including obesity and wellness, health literacy, dental health, and prescription assistance. Our goals for our service area are to: 1) reduce childhood obesity and enhance the health and wellbeing of elementary school children; 2) train teachers on bullying awareness, prevention and intervention; and 3) introduce oral health education to elementary students.

60 elementary schools participate in KDRP programs including:

  • TAKE10!®, a wellness program that incorporates physical activity into curriculum
  • School wellness committees
  • Anti-bullying, internet safety/cyber-bullying awareness and prevention presentations
  • Delta Tours for 4th graders focusing on healthy dental, diet, exercise and lifestyle choices.

Since 2003, KDRP has supported prescription assistance efforts. KDRP supports three service area sites including Hopkins County Community Clinic in Madisonville (Hopkins County, KY), Helping Hands Health Clinic in Elkton (Todd County, KY), and Helpings Hands of Trigg County in Cadiz, KY. The program has served 2,950+ clients with more than $6.3 million estimated value of medications distributed.
