The Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Regional Medical Center

A Stepping Stone In Your Healing Process...

Rehabilitation is a team of healthcare professionals working together to help patients regain function or skills lost due to injury or disability. A treatment plan is developed for each patient after the team assesses the patient's needs and current level of functioning. Patients take an active role in helping the team develop their treatment plan.

The Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Regional Medical Center is supported by staff physicians and other health care professionals in virtually every medical specialty. This provides patients with a continuum of care ranging from routine physician visits or hospital admission to outpatient therapy.

Our Community Physician Liaison is available to visit facilities or homes to preform an evaulation to determine if the patient meets criteria for admission to ARU. Please call for more information or to schedule an evaulation at 825-5500 or 871-4108.

How Do You Know If You Qualify?

The patient's physician will make a referral for a rehab evaluation. Once the referral is received, our Admission Coordinator, a registered nurse, will evaluate the patient at home, hospital or via fax through the patient's case manager to determine the need for acute rehabilitation services.

The admission's nurse will review the patient's medical history, review previous level of function, assess motivational status. Determine rehab potential, and establish payment source. After gathering this information the admissions nurse will present the patient's case to the rehab admissions team. Together they will determine whether or not RMC's Acute Rehab Unit is the appropriate treatment environment.

We will then notify the patient, the patient's doctor, case manager, nursing staff and family of our determination.

What Happens Once Admitted?

  • Once admitted to the unit the patient will be evaluated by the Medical Director to help determine rehab potential.
  • The family is requested to support the patient during his/her rehab stay to follow the rehab program.
  • The rehab team will evaluate the patient's progress on a twice weekly basis to determine progress toward goals.

What Kinds Of Things Does the Patient Do?

Monday - Saturday, 8:00 - 4:00 will include a minimum of three hours of scheduled therapy sessions. The patient's therapy schedule is individualized to meet their needs daily. Daily sessions may include balance training, walking, showering, dressing and other therapeutic activities.

When Can My Family Visit?

Visiting hours for Acute Rehabilitation have been established to help foster a therapeutic environment for our patients. Family and friends are encouraged to visit Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturdays noon to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Clergy may visit at any time.

When Does The Patient Go Home?

Discharge will be determined by the rehab team based upon the following:

  • Completion of the program and/or treatment goals met.
  • Change in medical condition requiring more acute medical/nursing care.
  • Patient's refusal to participate in the recommended plan of care.
  • Unavailability of a therapeutic program to meet the patient's needs.
  • The ultimate goal is to assist the patient to his/her highest level of functioning.

How Do You Pay For Rehab?

Acute Rehab services are paid for by most health insurance companies. The payment source will be established prior to admission. As a service to our patients, RMC will handle the filing of insurance information.
